New BMBF Project at IPQ: KONFORM
In the project running from July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2024, the researches at IPQ will collaborate with multiple reputable industry partners to work on multiple topics related to space-division multiplexed optical fiber communication.
Meeting the ever-increasing demand for capacity in optical data links requires the introduction of new technologies in these communication networks. In this context, the KONFORM (Skalierung der Kommunikationsinfrastruktur in vernetzten Rechenzentren mittels faseroptischem Raummultiplex) project aims to significantly increase the information density of future fully integrated electro-optical transceivers by exploiting space-division multiplexing. To this end, the IPQ and its partners evaluate completely novel 3D-printed waveguide structures on micrometer scales as an interface between planar photonic integrated circuits and multicore or multimode fibers. This way, the potential of space-division multiplexing becomes useable while adhering to the stringent requirements on integration into transceivers for data center applications. The IPQ primarily focuses on studying ultra-compact mode multiplexers that enable coupling to multimode fibers. Conceptual considerations at the system and algorithm level will complement this work. The final goal is an experimental demonstrator of the entire system setup.
