Prof. Dr. Christian Koos
ERC Consolidator Grant for Prof. Dr. Christian Koos

November 2017: Prof. Dr. Christian Koos received the ERC Consolidator Grant for his project TeraSHAPE (Terahertz Waveform Synthesis and Analysis Using Hybrid Photonic-Electronic Circuits). TeraSHAPE aims at establishing the foundations of novel signal processing concepts at T-wave frequencies between 100 GHz and 1 THz and at combining massively parallel processing in digital electronic circuits with synthesis and analysis of broadband waveforms in the optical domain.

The ERC awards funding to excellent investigators looking to set up or consolidate their own independent research team or programme to pursue ground-breaking, high-gain/high-risk research. The project of Prof. Dr. Christian Koos was selected among 2 538 submissions.

Preisträger 2017
Gips Schüle Research Award 2017 goes to Sascha Mühlbrandt, Christian Koos and Manfred Kohl

November 2017: The IPQ/IMT team received the Gips Schüle Research Award (50.000 €) for their work on plasmonic internal photoemission detectors (PIPED). These devices combine ultra-compact footprint with electro-optical bandwidths of hundreds of GHz and have the potential to act as ultra-fast interfaces between optical and wireless communication networks. The Gips Schüle Research Award honors and supports outstanding performance in applied research in the area of “People and Technology” and is awarded biannually by the Gips Schüle Foundation.

ECOC 2017 - Post-Deadline Paper

September 2017: IPQ researchers will present their most recent results on integrating highly-efficient silicon-organic hybrid (SOH) modulators into a photonic multi-chip module at this year’s European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC) in Gothenburg, Sweden. The work at the frontier of integrated optics exploits the concept of photonic wire bonding and highlights the potential of hybrid multi-chip integration for building small and energy-efficient transceivers that support advanced modulation formats. ECOC is the largest conference on optical communication in Europe.

Nature: Massively parallel optical transmission using microresonator soliton combs

June, 2017: We are proud to present our recent results on high-speed communications using Kerr frequency combs and to have set a new record for optical data transmission: The work demonstrates massively parallel wavelength-division multiplexing at data rates beyond 50 Tbit/s. This was accomplished by exploiting solitons for broadband frequency comb generation in Kerr-nonlinear microresonators. The publication appeared in Nature Vol 546 today on 08 June 2017.

SCOOTER – Silicon-organic Hybrid Transceivers for Terabit/s Data Networks

February 2017: The project "SCOOTER – Silicon-organic Hybrid Transceivers for Terabit/s Data Networks" has been selected for funding in the framework of the Proof of Concept initiative of the European Research Council (ERC-PoC). SCOOTER aims at evaluating the commercial potential of power-efficient high-speed electro-optic modulators that combine the processing advantages of silicon photonic integration with the wealth of optical properties provided by organic electro-optic materials.

The team of KIT researchers headed by Christian Koos will receive EUR 150,000 for exploring the innovative potential of their results. The ERC Proof of Concept initiative aims at supporting ERC grantees to bridge the gap between research and the early-stage commercialization.
