Martin Walther was born 1961 in Crailsheim, Germany. He received his Diploma degree in physics from the University of Stuttgart in 1988 and his PhD degree from the University of Munich in 1993.
From 1993 to 1995 he was working on quantum functional devices at Motorola Inc. in Phoenix, Arizona. He then joined the Paul-Drude-Institut in Berlin as project manager for integrated compound semiconductor microsystems. Since August 1996 he is employed at the Fraunhofer-Institut für Angewandte Festkörperphysik as head of the department for epitaxy and infrared devices. Current research interests include the development of quantum functional infrared detectors for advanced thermal imaging systems, epitaxial growth and materials development for new detectors and lasers as well as the improvement of high-frequency electronic devices.
Dr. Walther holds several patents and has authored or co-authored more than 130 scientific publications. He was awarded the “Stifterpreis der Deutschen Wissenschaft” for his work on infrared detectors for thermographic imaging in 2001 and the “Landesforschungspreis Baden Württemberg 2002” for his work on high power diode lasers with excellent beam quality
